Reina Abdulaziz: Nearly Five Years of Enforced Disappearance Without Trial

Saudi activist Reina Abdulaziz has now spent nearly five years in detention since her arrest on 13 May 2021, in a case that exemplifies the pattern of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance targeting peaceful activists in the Kingdom. To date, there has been no transparent disclosure of her legal status. She has not been brought before a public court, no formal charges have been clearly announced, and her family has been denied regular access to her.

Reina was arrested from her home in the Qassim region during a broader security crackdown that targeted dozens of activists and online commentators calling for expanded civic freedoms and greater space for peaceful expression. From the outset, authorities declined to clarify the legal basis of her detention or allow her lawyer meaningful access to her case file. The prolonged secrecy surrounding her whereabouts and legal status places her situation within the framework of enforced disappearance under international legal standards.

For nearly five years, she has reportedly remained in detention without a transparent judicial process. The absence of public proceedings, clear charges, or due process guarantees raises serious concerns about violations of her right to liberty, fair trial, and legal certainty. Holding an individual for such an extended period without formal adjudication undermines the core principles of the rule of law.

Her case is further aggravated by serious health concerns. Reina is reported to suffer from a severe bacterial lung condition requiring consistent medical treatment and appropriate living conditions. Despite repeated appeals from her family, authorities have allegedly restricted access to necessary medication and failed to provide adequate medical care. The denial of proper treatment intensifies concerns about her physical safety and well-being while in custody.

Reina’s arrest occurred amid a wider wave of detentions in 2021 that targeted young activists over their peaceful online activity. The criminalization of social media expression and reform-oriented views has created an environment in which digital advocacy can result in prolonged and opaque detention.

Together for Justice affirms that Reina Abdulaziz’s continued detention without trial, combined with restricted family contact and inadequate medical care, constitutes a grave violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and the right to health. The sustained lack of transparency surrounding her case deepens concerns that her deprivation of liberty has moved beyond lawful detention into prolonged arbitrary confinement.

Together for Justice calls for her immediate and unconditional release, full clarification of her legal status, guaranteed access to her family and legal counsel, and the provision of comprehensive medical care without delay. Nearly five years of silence and secrecy cannot be reconciled with the most basic standards of justice and human dignity.
