Abdulaziz Al-Tarifi: Unverified Release Reports Contradicted by Evidence of Continued Detention After More Than Ten Years

Together for Justice expresses grave concern over the continued uncertainty surrounding the fate of Saudi Islamic scholar Abdulaziz Al-Tarifi, who was arrested on 23 April 2016 over his peaceful expression of opinion, with no transparent public account of the charges against him or the judicial proceedings concerning his detention.

Concerns over his safety have intensified following reports in June 2025 claiming that he had been released, which were subsequently disputed by human rights sources. Further reporting in August 2026 indicated that he remained in solitary confinement at Al-Ha’ir Prison in Riyadh.

The organization warns that circulating claims of a detainee’s release without independent verification, particularly after years of isolation and restrictions on family contact, creates serious concerns about the person’s safety and can undermine efforts to establish their whereabouts.

Detained Since April 2016

Abdulaziz Al-Tarifi is a prominent Saudi scholar known for his work in Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith studies, as well as his publications, lectures, and significant presence on social media.

He was arrested on 23 April 2016 following online statements criticizing certain government-related policies and practices.

Since his arrest, his case has raised serious concerns regarding arbitrary detention, the absence of transparent judicial proceedings, prolonged solitary confinement, restrictions on family communication, and reported medical neglect.

Earlier reports also highlighted deteriorating health conditions during his detention, including concerns over access to adequate medical treatment.

More than ten years later, substantial questions remain about his legal status, detention conditions, and the protection of his fundamental rights.

June 2025: Release Claims Without Independent Confirmation

On 29 June 2025, reports circulated claiming that Saudi authorities had released Abdulaziz Al-Tarifi after more than nine years in detention.

Those reports suggested that he remained subject to restrictions on travel, public appearances, and publishing.

However, other human rights sources disputed the reports on the same day and maintained that Al-Tarifi remained in custody.

No independently verifiable public evidence established that he had physically left prison or regained his liberty.

The uncertainty deepened on 26 August 2026, when further human rights reporting stated that Al-Tarifi was still being held in solitary confinement at Al-Ha’ir Prison in Riyadh.

These contradictory accounts raise serious questions about his actual situation, particularly given the absence of a clear official explanation or independently verified confirmation of release.

Together for Justice warns that unsubstantiated reports of a prisoner’s release may reduce public scrutiny, weaken international advocacy, and leave the detainee increasingly vulnerable to abuses that remain hidden from public attention.

Although the organization makes no determination about who circulated the claims or their motives, it stresses that unsupported release announcements cannot replace reliable evidence of a detainee’s freedom and safety.

Serious Concerns Over Enforced Disappearance

Together for Justice considers the continued uncertainty surrounding Al-Tarifi’s fate particularly alarming in light of the restrictions on communication and transparency that have characterized his case.

Until Saudi authorities provide official confirmation of his legal status, disclose reliable information about his whereabouts, and enable independent verification of his safety, his case must remain under urgent scrutiny as one raising serious concerns of continuing enforced disappearance.

Under international human rights standards, enforced disappearance involves the deprivation of liberty by state authorities followed by concealment of the person’s fate or whereabouts, or refusal to acknowledge the detention, placing the individual outside the protection of the law.

The existence of reports identifying Al-Ha’ir Prison as his place of detention does not remove the authorities’ responsibility to disclose his status officially and allow his family and legal representatives to verify his condition.

Previous reports of prolonged solitary confinement and inadequate medical care further increase the urgency of establishing his safety.

Additional concerns emerged in August 2026 following information suggesting that Saudi prosecutors had sought the death penalty against him. That information was subsequently disputed in September. In the absence of publicly available judicial documentation resolving the conflicting reports, full disclosure of his legal situation remains essential.

Continued Detention and Lack of Transparency

The case reflects broader concerns over the criminalization of peaceful expression and the prolonged detention of individuals without sufficient judicial transparency.

Every detainee has the right to be informed of the grounds for detention, access legal representation, challenge the legality of imprisonment, and communicate with family members.

Together for Justice stresses that freedom of expression includes the right to peacefully criticize public policies and institutions without fear of arbitrary arrest or punishment.

The organization also emphasizes that an announcement of release should not be considered conclusive unless the individual has demonstrably regained their freedom.

Where reports of release are contradicted by subsequent evidence of continued detention, the authorities must provide an immediate, credible, and verifiable explanation.

Calls for Immediate Disclosure and Release

Together for Justice calls on Saudi authorities to immediately clarify Abdulaziz Al-Tarifi’s whereabouts, health condition, and legal status, and explain the conflicting reports concerning his alleged release on 29 June 2025.

The organization demands his immediate and unconditional release if he remains detained, and the removal of any restrictions imposed because of his peaceful expression of opinion.

It also calls for unrestricted communication with his family and lawyer, independent verification of his safety, and access to appropriate medical care.

Together for Justice further demands an independent investigation into his detention conditions, reported solitary confinement, medical neglect, and the continuing lack of transparency surrounding his case.

Relevant United Nations human rights mechanisms must also seek urgent clarification from the Saudi authorities and ensure that his rights and safety are protected.

Reports claiming that a detainee has been released, without credible evidence of freedom, cannot end concerns about his fate. When subsequent information indicates continued imprisonment, those concerns become even more serious.

More than ten years after his arrest, Abdulaziz Al-Tarifi’s case remains unresolved.

Where is Abdulaziz Al-Tarifi today? Was he genuinely released, or does he remain behind bars? Why have Saudi authorities failed to provide a clear and verifiable account of his fate?

Together for Justice insists that his fate must be disclosed, his safety guaranteed, and his fundamental rights fully restored.

Freedom cannot be established through unverified announcements. It must be real, verifiable, and unconditional.
