Abdullah Al-Yahya Imprisoned for Rejecting Normalization: Arbitrary Detention Exposes Saudi Arabia’s Criminalization of Pro-Palestinian Expression

Together for Justice renews its call for the immediate and unconditional release of Saudi academic Dr. Abdullah Al-Yahya, who has been detained since December 2021 over his peaceful expression of opposition to normalization with the Israeli occupation.

Al-Yahya has now spent more than four years behind bars, not for any recognized criminal act, but for expressing a political and moral position on social media. On 19 December 2021, he posted a tweet criticizing advocates of normalization and “peace” with Israel, stating: “To the advocates of normalization and peace: the last thing the Zionist entity thinks about — as it moves toward becoming a republic of rabbis — is your cheerleading for peace.”

Shortly after that post, Al-Yahya disappeared from public view and stopped publishing on his social media accounts. It later emerged that he had been detained by Saudi State Security. For a prolonged period, authorities failed to disclose his place of detention or the reasons for his arrest, while denying him regular access to his family and legal counsel.

Al-Yahya is an academic and researcher in Islamic studies, holding a doctorate from the University of Punjab in Lahore. His academic work focused on contemporary Islamic trends in the Gulf Cooperation Council states. Yet his scholarly background did not protect him from repression; rather, his independent views appear to have made him a target in an environment where dissent from the official line is treated as a security threat.

From a legal perspective, detaining Al-Yahya over a peaceful tweet constitutes a clear violation of freedom of opinion and expression. His reported enforced disappearance, denial of family contact, and lack of access to legal representation further undermine his right to liberty, due process, and fair trial guarantees.

Together for Justice stresses that rejecting normalization with Israel and defending Palestinian rights are legitimate forms of political and moral expression. They must never be criminalized, securitized, or used as grounds for detention.

Al-Yahya’s case reflects a broader pattern in Saudi Arabia, where voices opposing normalization or expressing solidarity with Palestine are increasingly silenced. At a time when official and unofficial signs of rapprochement with Israel continue to grow, peaceful criticism of such policies is being treated as a punishable offense.

Together for Justice calls for the immediate release of Dr. Abdullah Al-Yahya, full disclosure of his legal and health status, and guarantees of access to his family and a lawyer of his choosing. The organization also calls for an end to the prosecution of individuals for expressing opposition to normalization or support for Palestinian rights.

The continued detention of Abdullah Al-Yahya sends a dangerous message: that rejecting occupation and defending Palestine can lead to imprisonment in Saudi Arabia. This is not only a violation of one man’s rights; it is an attempt to silence every independent voice that refuses to accept normalization imposed through fear.
