Dr. Ali Al-Omari Remains Imprisoned as Saudi Regime Suppresses Reformist Religious Discourse and Youth Media Initiatives

The prolonged detention of Saudi academic, Islamic scholar, and media figure Dr. Ali Al-Omari illustrates the Saudi regime’s systematic repression of independent intellectual and media initiatives, including those grounded in moderation, reform, and non-violence.

Dr. Al-Omari was arrested in September 2017 during a coordinated crackdown targeting scholars, preachers, thinkers, and media figures whose public influence existed outside direct state control. This campaign marked a decisive shift toward the criminalisation of independent religious and social discourse, regardless of its peaceful or reform-oriented nature.

Throughout his public career, Dr. Al-Omari was known for promoting a moderate Islamic discourse, rejecting extremism, supporting women’s participation in society, and encouraging youth engagement through constructive, non-violent means. His most prominent initiative, For Youth (4Shbab) TV, became a leading platform addressing Arab youth through educational, cultural, and civic programming that explicitly countered radicalisation and ideological extremism.

Rather than recognising this contribution, the Saudi regime shut down the channel and dismantled its activities, before targeting its founder. The closure of For Youth and the subsequent detention of Dr. Al-Omari sent an unambiguous message: independent youth-oriented platforms are not tolerated unless fully subordinated to the state narrative.

Following his arrest, Dr. Al-Omari was charged with more than thirty offences, including allegations of terrorism and the formation of a “secret youth organisation.” These accusations contradict the public, licensed, and transparent nature of his work and appear designed solely to justify his continued detention.

From the outset, Dr. Al-Omari was subjected to serious human rights violations. He was held in prolonged solitary confinement for over fifteen months and subjected to physical torture, including severe beatings, electric shocks, and cigarette burns. He was denied contact with his family and prevented from receiving visits or phone calls for extended periods.

He was later tried before the Specialised Criminal Court in closed proceedings that violated fundamental fair-trial standards. He was denied access to legal representation, and prosecutors reportedly sought the death penalty, underscoring the political nature of the proceedings.

As a result of torture and prolonged medical neglect, Dr. Al-Omari has reportedly developed kidney failure. Despite the severity of his condition, the Saudi regime continues to deny him adequate medical care and restrict family access, placing his life at serious risk.

Dr. Al-Omari’s case reflects a broader pattern of repression targeting religious moderation, youth engagement, and independent media. The dismantling of For Youth and the continued detention of its founder exemplify the Saudi regime’s intolerance of any influence beyond its absolute control.

Together for Justice holds the Saudi regime fully responsible for Dr. Al-Omari’s safety and well-being and reiterates its call for his immediate and unconditional release, the annulment of all politically motivated charges, urgent access to medical treatment, and accountability for those responsible for his torture and abuse.

Together for Justice urges the international community to move beyond rhetorical concern and take concrete steps to address the Saudi regime’s ongoing violations against prisoners of conscience, including Dr. Ali Al-Omari.
