Threats Instead of Jobs: Saudi Authorities Escalate Against Young Citizens Demanding Employment and Fair Hiring Practices

Together for Justice condemns the Saudi authorities’ escalating campaign against young citizens who have spoken out about unemployment, unfair hiring practices, and the lack of decent job opportunities in the country.
Instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of jobseekers, reviewing hiring policies, or responding transparently to complaints about nepotism and the preference given to foreign employees in major state-linked projects, the authorities have resorted to intimidation, summonses, and online threats.
The recent wave of pressure against citizens discussing unemployment reflects a dangerous pattern: turning a social and economic grievance into a security issue. Young Saudis who demand work, criticize corruption, or question recruitment practices are being treated as a threat, rather than as citizens raising legitimate concerns about their future.
Together for Justice stresses that demanding employment is not a crime. Speaking about poverty, unemployment, or unfair hiring does not constitute a threat to public order. It falls within the basic rights to freedom of expression, public participation, and the right to decent work.
The use of loyalist influencers and public figures to intimidate unemployed citizens and warn them against speaking out reveals the extent to which the authorities fear public frustration. A government that threatens jobseekers instead of creating opportunities is not protecting stability; it is suppressing accountability.
This campaign also exposes the gap between official narratives about “Vision 2030,” empowerment, and opportunity, and the reality faced by many young Saudis who feel excluded from the very projects promoted as their future.
Together for Justice calls on the Saudi authorities to immediately halt the intimidation campaign against jobseekers and critics of hiring policies, cancel any measures taken against individuals for peacefully expressing their views, and stop using media and security laws to silence public debate.
The organization further calls for transparency regarding hiring practices in major state-backed projects, including clear disclosure of Saudization rates, recruitment standards, and promotion policies.
Suppressing complaints will not solve unemployment. Threatening those who speak will not create jobs. Real stability begins when citizens are treated as rights-holders, not as suspects for demanding dignity and work.
